Carlson’s Patricia Maina Excels on Field and in the Classroom
by Jeff Meade , from the Monroe Evening News May 14. 2010 11:51PM

The Gibraltar Carlson senior is putting the caps on a Marauder career filled with remarkable achievements on the field and in the classroom.
Maina is a four-year varsity soccer player who has earned Monroe County All-Region, All-Downriver and honorable mention All-State honors as a center defender. She also plays travel soccer in the offseason, ran cross country for Carlson and works part-time as a hostess/busser at Three Hermanos, a Mexican restaurant.
Her activities haven’t prevented her from being named valedictorian for the Class of 2010. She carries a 4.22 grade-point average despite four advanced placement classes in English, biology, U.S. history and calculus.

Art Award Winner
Congratulations go out to Chantelle Baron for coming in second place for the annual 15th District Congressional Art Competition. Her artwork, one of many entries, was chosen for second place and will proudly be displayed in the Congressional offices in Washington D.C. She worked very hard on her watercolor painting and it turned out absolutely spectacular. This is just another story of a CHS student making her family, school, and community proud.

Free Hearing and Vision Clinic this Summer
The Wayne County Department of Public Health will be offering FREE hearing and vision screenings for children 3-18 years old at the Gibraltar Community Center on Tuesday, July 27th from 11a-3p. The flyer (click here) has all these details plus the Center’s address and phone number.
The flyer also outlines the law that ALL children entering kindergarten MUST present a statement to school officials that they’ve received VISION SCREENING after age 3. Many future Gibraltar Schools’ youngsters may have missed this opportunity at the April Kindergarten Roundup here at the Board Office, so this is a great way for those parents to get this requirement taken care of.
