- Each student must select and read one additional novel per semester, from a provided reading list.
English Language Arts 9
Ninth Grade World Literature is a two semester class that will focus on a fundamental and thematic approach to literature from around the globe by integrating communication processes such as reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing. Reading comprehension and critical analysis of literary texts will extend into written and oral assessment formats for exposition, exploration and reflective purposes. Students will be exposed to structures of writing such as the short story, the novel, poetry, and various expository pieces. Students will need to show mastery of appropriate literary terms, the sentence, the expository paragraph and other grammatical formats. Tests, quizzes, class discussions, homework, projects, writing assignments and other appropriate criteria will determine student grades.
Basic Units of Study: literary terms review, short stories, novels and novellas, drama, grammar (with major focus upon sentencing and paragraphing), mythology, public speaking, and poetry.
English Language Arts 10
World Literature is a yearlong class that will focus on a fundamental and thematic approach to literature from around the globe by integrating communication processes such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. Reading comprehension and critical analysis of literary texts will extend into written and oral assessment formats for exposition, exploration and reflective purposes. Students will be exposed to structures of writing such as the Argumentative Essay, Compare/Contrast Essay, Short Story and Poetry to show mastery of appropriate literary terms and grammatical formats. Tests, quizzes, class discussions, homework, projects and writing assignments determine student grades.
Basic Units of Study: literary terms review, short stories, novels and novellas, drama, grammar, epics/myths/legends, public speaking, and poetry.
English Language Arts Advanced 10
World Literature is a yearlong class that will focus on a fundamental and thematic approach to literature from around the globe by integrating communication processes such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. Reading comprehension and critical analysis of literary texts will extend into written and oral assessment formats for exposition, exploration and reflective purposes. Students will be exposed to structures of writing such as the argumentative essay, compare/contrast essay, short story and poetry to show mastery of appropriate literary terms and grammatical formats. Tests, quizzes, class discussions, homework, projects and writing assignments determine student grades. The advanced class will cover a more rigorous study of literature and writing than the general class and the student must be prepared to accomplish the advanced tasks required.

English Language Arts 12
The emphasis of this class is to finalize basic communications skills in comprehending writing, speaking and understanding for both those students who intend to continue their education after high school and those who will have completed their education at the end of their high school career. Tests, quizzes, class discussions, and special projects (both written and oral) determine the students’ grades.
This class will concentrate on a basic survey of English and world literature, a grammar review, a comprehensive study of vocabulary pertinent to the everyday world, a chance to practice public speaking and a review of various types of writing. Several thematic units will be covered each semester. Additional readings and activities will be added at the teacher’s discretion as time allows.

English Language Arts 12 Great Drama/Composition
Great Drama: A semester class that will focus on a fundamental and thematic approach to drama from around the globe by integrating communication processes such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. Reading comprehension and critical analysis of literary texts will extend into written and oral assessment formats for exposition, exploration and reflective purposes. Tests, quizzes, class discussions, homework, projects and writing assignments will determine student grades.
Composition: A review of everyday writing activities, including a review of grammar and various writing activities. Student composition will include portfolios, friendly letters, business letters, and newspaper advertisements.
Basic Units of Study: Great Drama: literary terms review, character, drama, grammar, and public speaking. Composition: grammar and composition skills.
