Business Courses

The Business Education program has areas of study which include clerical, secretarial, business administration and marketing. The business Department is dedicated to the concept that most work bound Carlson High School graduates will eventually work in a business setting. The Department is designed to pave the way to the workplace or further post-secondary training.

The Clerical Program has been designed to provide basic job skills for clerical office occupations. Examples of the many office positions available are bookkeepers, accounts receivable clerks, accounts payable clerks, payroll clerks, and office assistants.

The Secretarial Program has been designed to enable students to achieve secretarial skills for a position as an office secretary. They learn to handle a variety of routine tasks such as handling correspondence, welcoming visitors, scheduling appointments, and composing private reports.

The Business Administration area of study has been developed for those who expect to go to college and who wish to explore various business, managerial, and related occupations requiring college degrees. Such occupations would include public accounting, management, personnel administration, and government administration.

Marketing education offers an opportunity to understand how the goods and services reach the consumer. There are many job opportunities available for young people in the distribution of goods and services to consumers.

Accounting I

Financial activities of a sole proprietorship, partnership and corporation are the focus of this course. Theory and principles to include adjusting and closing procedures, payroll, bank reconciliation and preparation of financial statements will be covered. Students are introduced to various journals and the goal is to learn the complete accounting cycle. Some computer application will enhance the course.

Advanced Accounting

Advanced Accounting will review the financial activities of a sole-proprietorship, partnership, and corporation. Students will also learn to complete the accounting cycle for a departmentalized business and study accounting control systems such as inventory planning and valuation, uncollectible accounts, plant assets, depreciation, and voucher systems. Simulations and computer applications such as spreadsheets and accounting software will be used to further enhance the course.

 

BST I

This course teaches the touch keyboard system and enables the student to develop basic keyboard skills for word processing. The student will learn a degree of computer literacy and develop concepts related to word processing, spreadsheets, and databases through application projects. The business core curriculum will be emphasized to include listening, speaking, reading, writing, and math skills.

BST II

BST II is designed to build upon learned software skills (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and provide basic job skills for business occupations. An emphasis is placed on core business skills such as learning good work habits, problem solving techniques, leadership, and career planning. Often a team approach is used while students work on decision making skill and project development. Using software tools, students create a business plan and other documents necessary to start a business. International Business and Management concepts are also covered. A Virtual Business Simulation Software offers a unique perspective on running a business.

BST III

Web Design using HTML language along with various software programs such as Front Page, Dreamweaver MX, Illustrator, and Photoshop will be components of this course. The class will be responsible for the creation and maintenance of various school web sites In addition, the technology, services, and marketing of an E-commerce site will be covered. Students interested in careers as a Web Page Developer would benefit from this course.

Business Law

This course is designed to develop an understanding, respect, and feelings of responsibility toward the laws that regulate and effect our personal, consumer, business, and professional affairs in everyday life. Students will acquaint themselves with the federal law, contractual law, sales law, negotiable instruments, and laws that relate to the ownership of property. Students will complete fun projects and even conduct a mock trial. This is an essential course for individuals that want to gain an understanding and appreciation for the legal aspects that surround their home and business lives.

Marketing I

The curriculum for this course is similar to that of Marketing I but is studied in more depth. This course meets for two hours each day and is open to all DCTC students. Marketing I relates to the Business, Management, and Technology pathway, and will give students an opportunity to explore exciting careers such as fashion merchandising, sports entertainment, travel and tourism, and advertising.

Marketing II

This course is available to all DCTC students and relates to the Business, Management, Marketing, and Technology career pathway. Students in Marketing II will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the school store. Responsibilities will include ordering products, setting prices, stocking merchandise, creating displays, maintaining financial records, developing promotional strategies, practicing management techniques, and selling merchandise. In addition, students will study Entrepreneurship and discover how to create a business from its initial startup and manage the risks and responsibilities involved.
